Curriculum

PATL is a four-day program (two, two-day sessions).  Prior to the first session each principal completes the TAGLIT online.  (Each principal completes a leadership assessment, and 80 percent of the classroom teachers at the principal's school complete teacher's assessments.  Superintendents are not require to complete an assessment.)

The first two-day session focuses on vision and the status of technology integration at the participant's school/system.  Participants will: (1) learn, in accordance with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, to employ technology to involve students in real-life projects that develop critical thinking skills, (2) analyze preliminary results from the TAGLIT about technology use in their schools, (3) use a Technology Leadership Framework to organize professional development, planning, budgeting, etc. with respect to technology, and (4) create a web page about themselves.

The second two-day session will focus on instructional resources.  Participants will:  (1) learn about instructional technology organizations, websites, projects, listservs, organizations, models, books, and articles that are dedicated to helping administrators improve the use of technology for teaching and learning, (2) develop a technology action plan that addresses specific needs, and  (3) create a web page about their school/system and technology action plan.  back to table

Eligibility

PATL is open to all North Carolina superintendents and all principals of North Carolina schools with enrollments of at least 100 students (including independent schools).  Approximately twenty-one PATL Programs will be offered over the four year life of the grant.  A school can not send a principal consecutive years.  (For example, if Principal Jones from Smith Middle School attends this year then leaves Smith Middle School, Principal Jones’s successor at Smith will not be permitted to attend a PATL program next year.)

Unfortunately, the Gates Foundation grant stipulates that only principals and superintendents may participate in this program.  Therefore, assistant principals and central office administrators need not applyback to table

Fees

The cost to attend PATL is $250 per participant.  The fee is non-refundable.  Participants are also responsible for the costs of lodging and transportation to and from the program site.   back to table
